Die direkte Übersetzung von “Corporate Social Responsibility” (kurz CSR) lautet “Soziale Verantwortung des Unternehmens”, wobei sich die inhaltliche Bedeutung nicht allein auf soziale, sondern auf gesellschaftliche Themen bezieht. CSR ist also die gesellschaftliche Verantwortung von Unternehmen für nachhaltiges Handeln.  Die Themenbereiche des CSR lassen sich in drei Aspekte untergliedern: ökonomisches Handeln ökologisches Handeln und soziales Handeln. Unternehmerische Gesellschaftsverantwortung bedeutet also durch nachhaltiges Handeln, einen Beitrag zur globalen Nachhaltigkeit zu leisten.
